Death or Peach: The Vow

8 Jun

I love Rachel McAdams. But Channing Tatum, not so much. And them together? I’m lukewarm. But doesn’t cinema always need a romantic tearjerker? Wait, haven’t I already seen Rachel McAdams lose her memory in an epic love story? Oh right, its called The Notebook. Why god why do we need another? And one that’s called The Vow? I’m surprised this isn’t a Nicholas Sparks novel. This is exactly his kind of shit. But I shouldn’t be too much of a bitch, because this film is based on a true story after all. Though, I’m just not sure if I want to watch it on the big screen. And wouldn’t you know it, this film opens Valentine’s Day 2012. Say it with me, BARF – I mean DEATH!

Synopsis: A newlywed couple recovers from a car accident that puts the wife in a coma. Waking up with severe memory loss, her husband endeavours to win her heart again.

Reading ‘One Day’

6 May

I just started reading One Day by David Nicholls based on my friend’s recommendation. Before reading it, I knew there was film scheduled for release staring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. And look at that poster – how hot is that? Brilliant. And just last week, Focus Features released the trailer. Now I must admit, I didn’t watch it. I’m knee deep in the book and I’m not so keen on any spoilers.

But here’s what I think so far. I like the book, but I’m not in love. It’s interesting because I’m still reading it, not like Dead Until Dark. Could I do without it? Probably… but I guess I’m just waiting for the inevitable happy ending. We’ll see if we get there. Until then, I’ll be getting my read on.

Death or Peach: Submarine

22 Apr

The Weinstein Company released the trailer for Submarine today. I have to say, I’m intrigued. I heard very little about this film during TIFF 2010. And after seeing the trailer, I’m kind of wondering why. I love British films and television. They have a unique way of telling a story whether it’s a drama or comedy. Don’t you think? I personally love British humour – Love!

And here’s another flick we can add to the Brit roster. There’s something quite quirky and charming about the trailer. I love a good coming of age story and when it’s about the awkward and uncomfortable phase, it’s even better.

What do you think?

My Vote: Peach! All I got to do now is read the book!

Synopsis: Fifteen-year-old Oliver Tate has two big ambitions: to save his parents’ marriage via carefully plotted intervention and to lose his virginity before his next birthday. Worried that his mom is having an affair with New Age weirdo Graham, Oliver monitors his parents’ sex life by charting the dimmer switch in their bedroom. He also forges suggestive love letters from his mom to dad. Meanwhile, Oliver attempts to woo his classmate, Jordana, a self-professed pyromaniac who supervises his journal writing – especially the bits about her. When necessary, she orders him to cross things out. Based on Joe Dunthorne’s acclaimed novel, Submarine is a captivating coming-of-age story with an offbeat edge.

The Attack of the Fairytale

8 Mar

As you know I’m pumped for Red Riding Hood which opens this Friday mainly because the interpretation of this fairytale seems to step outside the fuzzy happy versions we’ve seen before. It looks dark and gloomy and I’m all over it.

Movie making lately mostly fall into the remake, prequel, sequel or adaption category. It’s very rare to find an original script these days. There are some out there, but it’s rare to find. Studios and distributors tend to bank on the films that will make the most money. Sometimes that means whatever’s safest. I think that’s why Christopher Nolan’s Inception was so remarkable. What’s been trending lately are the fairytale remakes. Red Riding Hood is just one of many that are on the horizon.

1. Snow White

  • Snow White and the Huntsman – It was announced a couple days ago that Kristen Stewart was cast as Snow White. Really? I honestly cannot see KStew dressing up in period costumes prancing around.
  • The Brothers Grimm: Snow White – Brett Ratner produced-version which probably means it’ll have some whoop ass in it.
  • Snow and the Seven – The Disney version. For some reason there are some serious Asian influences on this one and I have no idea why. It’s set in Hong Kong and China. I don’t get it. The seven dwarves are “seven international warriors.” I still don’t get it. Supposedly Natalie Portman will be playing the Asian Snow White and Jet Li is rumoured to be one of the seven international warriors. I’m still not getting it.
  • Once Upon a Time – a TV movie starting Ginnifer Goodwin who is a nun but discovers she was actually Snow White in a previous life. Snore.

2. Peter PanChanning Tatum will be playing the flying boy in an prequel called Pan which places Peter Pan and Captain Hook as bros. Honestly, I can only see Channing Tatum in Step Up and nothing more. Sorry… Remember what I thought about the trailer of The Eagle?

3. Pinocchio – There’s a new stop-motion animated version that’s in production. I’m a huge fan of stop-motion when done well. But a stop motion Pinocchio is an easy sell. The others on this list, not so much.

Now I admit, if I hadn’t seen the trailer of Red Riding Hood, I probably would feel just as lukewarm. But I did. So I’m hoping maybe a trailer may change my mind about Channing Tatum in green tights. Just maybe.

Death or Peach – Dylan Dog: Dead of Night

7 Mar

So I’m slightly getting tired of the whole zombie, werewolf, vampire thing (except The Vampire Diaries of course – addicted!). I’ve read that Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is based on a comic book. I don’t read comics but it seems there have been a lot of film adaptations lately. Not knowing anything about the comics and only seeing the trailer, I’m feeling less than thrilled.

I think the last time I’ve seen Brandon Routh in a lead was in Superman Returns where Kate Bosworth played a lame and underwhelming Lois Lane. Where has this dude been? The answer is no where exciting. So I guess you can say I’m a bit surprised that he’s in the lead role again and though I should be excited, I’m completely underwhelmed. He should have cashed in way more lead roles after Superman Returns. Just sayin!

Regardless of Routh what are your thoughts on the trailer?

My Vote: DEATH! The CGI looks great, but that’s about it. I’m guessing the comic must have been a  hit seeing how it was optioned. But this trailer just doesn’t do it for me.

Synopsis: The adventures of supernatural private eye, Dylan Dog, who seeks out the monsters of the Louisiana bayou in his signature red shirt, black jacket, and blue jeans.
